If Only…

Do you have regrets about some things, and have thoughts that begin with : ‘If only…’ ?

Mike was sitting in front of his small red house ten days ago , looking extremely dejected. We know that he has a chronic challenge with substance abuse. Beneath our village’s charming exterior, we deal with the unfortunate reality of much addiction.

We got to know Mike better last summer because when our lawnmower broke, he used to walk his mower over, from across the village, and cut our grass. He wouldn’t accept payment, but we made lunch for him.

I felt an intense desire to talk to Mike when I saw him sitting outside looking so forlorn, and I told my husband that we should go over to speak with him right away. He insisted, though, that we shop first, and then bring a pizza for Mike.

When we returned to Mike’s house he was gone, but his door was open. We called to him, but there was no response, and after a while we left.

Two days later, we learned that Mike was in the hospital, in a coma, and fighting for his life after an overdose. This tragedy had occurred just a short time after I saw him looking so despondent.

If only I’d listened my intuition to go over and speak to Mike.

Often the Holy Spirit may prompt us to act, and this prompting may feel like an intense , intuitive feeling, or a ‘gut ‘ feeling.

And, as you know, as Christ followers, we always need to be prepared for the unexpected.

After two days in intensive care, Mike recovered. If more mental health services were available here, he should have received further help, but in the village, like most places, resources are limited, and Mike was sent home.

We had another opportunity, by God’s grace, to go over to Mike’s house, to bring him food , household supplies, and above all, to tell him that God loves him, that there is always hope, and that we have been praying for him. We continue to minister to Mike.

May the Lord continue to sharpen our spiritual vision and hearing so that we can recognize people who may desperately need our help.

  1. Praise God for another opportunity He provided to minister to Mike! Please keep ministering to them, how wonderful On an encouraging note, my dad had addictions to alcohol and cigarettes before he became a Christian. Once He did, the Holy Spirit immediately provided the strength to quit his addictions cold turkey immediately. He can do that again or just give him daily strength. I am so happy you are there for him.😃❤

    1. The Holy Spirit showed his power by delivering your dad from alcohol and cigarette addictions. For sure, He provides us with incredible strength, which increases the more we submit to God, and trust Him.
We saw Mike again today. Thanks for sharing, Tonya. 🤗

    1. That is kind of you, Ryan.
That is one of the beautiful parts about being a Christian – the Holy Spirit inspires us to pray for people that we don’t know.
Praying for others is an act of spiritual mercy.
May God bless you as you pray for others. 🤗

  3. I’m glad you got a second chance. I didn’t. I’m a former paratrooper. We had gotten a bunch of new men in, and one was temporarily assigned to my room. I was a sergeant and didn’t usually get newbies to bunk with. A couple of days latter he was to make his first jump with the unit. I felt I should ask him if he knew Jesus, but I didn’t. He died in the jump. That has haunted me all my life. I’m telling this because it’s so important to follow that leading. Someone’s life may hang in the balance. Failures are hard to share. Thank you for sharing.

  4. What a different world we would live in if each person just “did the next right thing” for someone they know that is in need: a care package to Natalie’s Sisters that ministers to women caught in the sex trades; provide shelter for an Afghan family escaping the Taliban; buy some food for a homeless person (NEVER give cash!!); visit someone in jail, even if you don’t know them yet; just simply smile at the fraught worker that seems to be trying when you feel like criticizing. We cannot minister to thousands, but that is not what our Lord expects, anyway!
So many opportunities to “do it to one of the least of these” and discover we did it to our Lord.
    ❤️&🙏, c.a.

    1. Thanks so much, c.a. As you say, the Lord knows that we cannot minister to thousands, but may we minister faithfully to those that we can.
I am going to check out ‘Natalie’s Sisters’ . 🤗

  5. What a story Sally, I am so glad that Mike is okay and feeling the love of God by your kindness. It is a story I recognise in times where I did not act on the Spirit’s guidance, and regretted it. These are difficult lessons indeed. Thank you for sharing this, God bless you sister.

  6. I just want to say as a sister in the Lord, praise God He gives us a second chance to just as He has given to Mike. Praise God you are wise enough to follow through with Mike. I will pray for him and you both as you love on him.

  7. Oh Sally, this really touched me. May we be more attuned to His nudges and promptings and be obedient. The surprising thing is your hubby had a very good suggestion of taking food for him so that did not sound like a bad idea at all. But God knows when and where and we got to trust that. Trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding. God is good, he did allow for another opportunity for you both to minister to Mike and a teaching lesson that you will always carry.

  10. Great Post Sally: Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. (Romans 5:18 NIV) Truly one act can make a difference. It is such a blessing that God afforded you that opportunity. Be and stay blessed.

  11. Praying for Mike. I think all of who follow Christ resonate with this experience. Sometimes we do something good – kind of in line with what the Spirit is telling us – but not fully in line. And if we had really listened closely, and then responded perfectly, then the outcome would have been very different. It is something I am learning, and working on, too. Thanks for sharing this Sally.

  12. So glad to hear you had another chance to talk with Mike, keep it up, it may take some time. Yes, we should always listen to the Holy Spirit guiding us like that. I had such a feeling one time to witness to someone who was having a yard sale, he had been through a divorce and was selling his stuff to move out west. But I was in a hurry right then so decided to talk with him the next day. Unfortunately he shot himself that night. I still remember that and it was 30 years ago. Never put it off until tomorrow. God bless!🙂😺

    1. Thanks so much for these kind words. Growing up in a city in Ontario, I had never imagined living in a tiny isolated fishing village. But, our Lord places us all where we can best serve Him. 🤗
